Howto change MTU interface on Centos 6.3 / Redhat RHEL / Fedora

1. Default MTU on interface is 1500

[root@Centos6 ~]# ip addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000
link/ether 00:0c:29:55:52:41 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.0.112/24 brd 192.168.0.255 scope global eth0
[root@Centos6 ~]#

2. How to change MTU interface on Centos / Redhat RHEL / Fedora

[root@Centos6 ~]# ip linkset dev eth0 mtu 1300

3. Check MTU setting on Server

[root@Centos6 ~]# ip addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1300 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000
link/ether 00:0c:29:55:52:41 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.0.112/24 brd 192.168.0.255 scope global eth0
[root@Centos6 ~]#

4. If you want to change for permanent, you have to change in interface setting file

[root@Centos6 ~]# vi /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE=”eth0″
BOOTPROTO=”static”
HWADDR=”00:0C:29:55:52:41″
IPV6INIT=”yes”
NM_CONTROLLED=”yes”
MTU=1300
ONBOOT=”yes”
TYPE=”Ethernet”
IPADDR=192.168.0.112
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
UUID=”67ffccb8-2408-4ecb-bdd9-baf81f4911af”
